WASHINGTON, DC.- A hat trick from Weston McKennie and three assists from Jordan Morris helped the United States open Concacaf Nations League play with an emphatic victory over Cuba, winning 7-0 Friday at Audi Field in Washington D.C., United States.
McKennie set the tone just 30 seconds in, with a cross in the box getting past everyone and falling to the Schalke midfielder for him to finish past Cuba goalkeeper Nelson Johnston.
McKennie struck again in the fifth minute, with Morris putting in a cross for him at the back post and McKennie using his first touch with his right foot to finish off the move. And in the 13th minute, the hat trick was complete, though Jordan Morris had added a third in the 9th minute.
Josh Sargent scored his debut Nations League goal in the 40th minute, and Christian Pulisic put the bow on the victory with a 62nd-minute penalty kick, with the Americans coasting the rest of the match after the overwhelming start. They also benefited from a 37th-minute own goal from Dario Ramos.
The United States now travels to Toronto to face Canada next week in a match that may decide who finishes atop Group A.
