MANAGUA, Nicaragua – Suriname collected a 2-1 win at Nicaragua in Group D of League B of the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League on Monday night at the National Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua.
With the victory, Suriname jumps Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to finish top of the group and gain promotion into League A. The top spot also grants Suriname qualification to the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Nicaragua finishes third in the group with a 2W-1D-3L record.
Suriname went on the offensive immediately and nearly took the lead two minutes in, but a Nigel Hasselbaink long-range attempt was denied by the woodwork.
The visitors eventually grabbed the advantage after defending a corner kick. Ivenzo Comvalius converted on the ensuing counterattack for his second CNL goal in the 20th minute.
Hasselbaink also found his way on the scoresheet with his first CNL goal to extend Suriname’s lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.
Nicaragua fought back to halve the deficit with a Rigoberto Fuentes strike off a corner in the 61st minute, but in the end, Suriname closed things out to collect the win.
In a tightly contested match, Nicaraguan goalkeeper Brayan Torres finished with two saves, while Suriname’s Claidel Kohinor had three of his own.
