KINGSTOWN, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – Saint Vincent and the Grenadines took a big step toward the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over Nicaragua on Friday afternoon in Group D of League B of the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown.
The result gives Vincy Heat a four-point advantage in the group, with second-place Suriname to play later on Friday.
It was an open, end-to-end first half between the two teams that incredibly ended with no goals scored.
Jaime Moreno and Carlos Chavarria each had chances to score, but was unable to find the target, while Nazir McBurnette and Azinho Solomon came closest for Vincy Heat.
The game’s first goal would finally arrive on the hour mark. Moments after a Solomon shot went wide, Jahvin Sunderland would charge into the area and spin a header goalward that beat Nicaragua GK Brayan Torres for a 1-0 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines lead.
Nicaragua looked to respond and substitute Ricardo Mendieta looked set to do so in the 68’, only to smack his shot off the crossbar. The woodwork came to the rescue again for the home side in the 86’ when Moreno’s header hit the post.
In the end, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines would hold on to secure the three points and a four-point lead in the group.
