PARAMARIBO, Suriname – A strike from Cornelius Stewart helped Saint Vincent and the Grenadines sink Suriname 1-0 in Group D of League B of the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League on Monday night at the Andre Kamperveen Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
After some early chances for the visitors, including a Diel Spring effort over the crossbar, Suriname would swing the momentum in their favor.
Led by FW Gleofilo Vlijter and his eight goals in the competition, Suriname started pelting the Vincy Heat goal and thought they had the breakthrough, but an offside ruling annulled the goal.
The game’s lone goal came in the 68’ thanks to some quick-thinking from the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines attack. A free kick was quickly taken and played to Stewart, who then ripped a right-footed shot into goal for a 1-0 lead.
Suriname pushed to find an equalizer and Vlijter looked set to do just that in the 78’ but was unable to get a clean shot on target off a cross from the right. That was followed by a stoppage time shot from Vlijter that required a top-notch save from GK Dwaine Sandy.
The win sends Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the top of the group with eight points, one ahead of Suriname and Nicaragua.
