PANAMA CITY, Panama.- Mexico clinched its place in the Concacaf Nations League Final Championship in the summer of 2020 with a 3-0 victory over Panama on Friday at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City.
The result cements a first-place finish in Group B of League A for El Tricolor.
Things could’ve gone much differently, with Panama putting a shot on goal in the fourth and fifth minutes, but El Tri goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa came up with a pair of saves.
Shortly after, Mexico had its opener. Rodolfo Pizarro went to the ground during an attacking run, but got back up and moved the ball to Roberto Alvarado. Alvarado turned and found Raul Jimenez, who converted his first-ever CNL goal.
Jimenez turned provider in the second half, going into space in the penalty area during a set piece and finding the ball at his feet. He weighed up a pass that got through Panama’s defense and was finished by Edson Alvarez.
Mexico put a bow on things with a late penalty. Second-half substitute Uriel Antuna got on the end of a long ball and cut inside the area, where he was taken down by Azmahar Ariano and earned a penalty.
Jimenez converted from the spot for his second goal of the night.
The group finale takes place Tuesday with Mexico hosting Bermuda.
