WILLEMSTAD, Curacao - Costa Rica topped Curacao 2-1 on Thursday night at Ergilio Hato Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao, to move atop Group D of League A of the Concacaf Nations League and put a spot in the semifinals within sight.
Costa Rica got on the scoreboard early thanks to a penalty kick from Johan Venegas. Venegas stepped to the spot in the 11th minute after a miscommunication at the back put Shermar Martina in an uncomfortable spot, and the defender committed a foul.
A goal from Rangelo Janga in the 19th minute drew things level once again. Juninho Bacuna beat his defender down the right side and put in a cross that Janga nodded in.
Curacao hunted for the second goal, and the win that would clinch a CNL semifinal spot that would’ve come with it, and looked the closer team to a breakthrough after Costa Rica’s Ricardo Blanco was shown a second yellow in the 65th minute for a tackle on Bacuna.
But despite being a man down, the Ticos still were able to get all three points thanks to a header form Francisco Calvo in the 84th minute off a corner kick.
Costa Rica can win the group with a point against Haiti next week.
