GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands -- The Cayman Islands defeated the US Virgin Islands 1-0 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town on Saturday night to pick up a crucial three points and seize the lead in Group A of League C.
The match began at a breakneck pace, and Michael Martin got the first clear chance when he nearly tucked a header into the corner in the 11th minute, but missed just wide.
Defender Ackeem Hyde then got on the end of a corner in the 17th minute and finished through heavy traffic to put the home side ahead.
Lionel Brown made a stunning save in the 53rd minute to keep the Dashing Eagle in the game, and the play seemed to energize the visitors, who created a couple of good chances over the next few minutes.
Brown’s performance all night long was admirable, with four saves total and several big stops that kept the US Virgin Islands in the game.
Though the Caymans rattled the post twice in the second half, there was no further scoring and they ended 1-0 victors.
The Cayman Islands travel to Barbados on Tuesday needing a win or draw to clinch the group. The US Virgin Islands will close out their campaign against Saint Martin in a battle for third place.
