GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Guatemala began their Concacaf Nations League journey with a comfortable 10-0 home victory over visitors Anguilla in Group C of League C on Thursday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City.
In front of a boisterous crowd, Los Chapines rushed out to an early lead in the 13th minute courtesy of Jorge Vargas, who pulled off a nifty spin move to get around Anguillan keeper Ryan Liddie and tucked the ball home.
Guatemala quickly doubled the lead through Jose Martinez Navas, but to their credit Anguilla settled in, making for a spell of back and forth.
No doubt the highlight of the match was a 37th minute magical free kick from Universidad de Guadalajara man Marvin Ceballos, who rifled the ball in from nearly 30 yards out past a diving Liddie, off the crossbar and into goal.
It can’t be ignored that throughout the match Liddie dazzled the home spectators with a number of fine saves. His performance was nothing short of stellar.
Guatemala added more goals from Alejandro Galindo, Jonathan Marquez, and Ceballos, and Danilo Guerra stole the show in the second half with a staggering four goals off the bench.
