CIUDAD GUATEMALA.- Guatemala and Anguilla will kick off Group C of League C in the Concacaf Nations League on Thursday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, where Los Chapines will begin their campaign toward promotion to League B.
Standing in their way will be Anguilla, who demonstrated their feisty road capabilities when they took the lead in the Bahamas during qualifying, and ultimately returned home with a draw for their efforts.
Guatemala has brought a squad consisting primarily of players from the Guatemalan Liga Nacional, including five from the Comunicaciones team that just advanced to the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank Concacaf League last week.
Among them is Gerardo Gordillo, who has two goals in that competition for Los Cremas including the series-clincher against fellow Guatemalan team Guastatoya, who have sent three players of their own to La Selección.
Anguilla may not be used to traveling to Central America, but GK Ryan Liddie has seen it all. The 37-year-old veteran has been between the sticks for Anguilla since 2000 and his leadership and presence cannot be overstated as he guides many of the younger players into an atmosphere they don’t normally experience, though they did get a taste of this action when they traveled to Nicaragua during qualifying.
