SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – For the third time in 14 months, El Salvador and Montserrat will square off in Concacaf Nations League play on Saturday at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador as part of week 5 in Group B of League B.
Their first meeting came in September 2018 during CNL Qualifying when El Salvador edged the Emerald Boys 2-1 with a last-minute goal. Last month the Cuscatlecos again emerged triumphant from the Caribbean with a 2-0 win.
Saturday marks their first meeting in El Salvador and the home side will be looking to ride the hot form of FW Rodolfo Zelaya, who has scored in El Salvador’s last two matches, including the 2-0 win in Montserrat.
El Salvador currently top the group with nine points, two ahead of the Dominican Republic, thanks in part to the play of GK Henry Hernandez, who has eight saves in the CNL and has registered three clean sheets.
Montserrat can never be counted out though, especially when Spencer Weir-Daley is on the field. The FW has one of Montserrat’s three goals in the CNL and showed in CNLQ that he is capable of pulling off a spectacular strike from anywhere on the field.
