PORT SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago.- Honduras started its Concacaf Nations League campaign off successfully, topping Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 Thursday night in a League A match at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The win moves the Central Americans to the top of the table in Group C after the first two contests in group play resulted in draws.
After a scoreless first half, Los Catrachos broke through in 52nd minute when Alberth Elis took possession down the right wing and shimmied past his defender to put a low cross into the box. It was met by Brayan Moya, whose first-time effort beat T&T goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.
Despite losing Levi Garcia to his second yellow card in the 72nd minute, the home side still chased the result. Trinidad and Tobago had a chance in the 79th minute, with Kevin Molino’s free kick getting through traffic in the box and falling to Sheldon Bateau but the defender unable to put it on target.
Honduras capped the win with a 90th-minute goal. Elis again set things up, beating his man to get into the box but passing off to Douglas Martinez for a goal in his Honduras debut.
The next Group C match sees Honduras head home to take on Martinique.
