SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – El Salvador overcame a tough Saint Lucia side to collect a 3-0 victory in Group B of League B of the Concacaf Nations League on Saturday night at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador.
El Salvador enjoyed a dream start with Narciso Orellana providing the early fireworks in the 7’ on a 40-yard strike that kissed the underside of the crossbar and in for a 1-0 lead.
But Saint Lucia would hang tough and clamped down on the Cuscatleco attack to keep it a one-goal game going into intermission.
El Salvador mounted the pressure on the Saint Lucia defense in the second half and finally managed to double the lead in the 73’ when Darwin Ceren converted a penalty kick after a hand-ball in the area.
Despite a red card to Denis Pineda in the 78’, El Salvador kept pushing and when Saint Lucia GK Vino Barclett could only block a Marvin Monterroza effort, Nelson Bonilla was there to clean things up to round out the 3-0 scoreline in the 87’.
Saint Lucia will look to regroup versus Montserrat, while El Salvador will seek another three points in the Dominican Republic.
