SAN JOSE, Costa Rica.- One point was enough for Costa Rica as the Ticos punched their ticket to the Concacaf Nations League Finals with a 1-1 draw with Haiti at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose.
Francisco Calvo scored for the second consecutive match, nodding him a floated ball from Dylan Flores on a set piece in the 27th minute to open the scoring.
Haiti was back level before the halftime break, however. A Haitian corner bounced in the box and hit Costa Rica defender Giancarlo Gonzalez’s arm in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot after spotting the infraction.
Duckens Nazon stepped up and converted in the 38th minute, putting Haiti just a goal from winning the group and moving to the semifinals.
It wasn’t to be, however, despite several promising attacks.
Costa Rica thought it had a winner in the 87th minute with Jonathan Moya heading the ball past Johny Placide but the assistant putting the flag up for offside.
The draw will suffice for the home team, with Costa Rica finishing atop the group and Haiti being relegated to League B. Curacao finishes in second, advancing to the Gold Cup automatically.
