THE VALLEY, Anguilla -- Saint Martin defeated Barbados 1-0 on Sunday in Anguilla, keeping the Tridents out of first place in League C Group A for the time being.
Barbados came into the game looking to score early and seize control, and the chances were brewing throughout the first 15 minutes.
But Saint Martin held firm, fending off each Bajan attack and even hitting back with a few chances of their own.
Kishmar Primus sparked a beautiful counterattack in the 34th minute, but the play was broken up by the last line of the home defense.
Saint Martin very nearly had a goal in the 60th minute, but Andy Felsina was ruled just barely offside, and again in the 63rd minute, but Mario Williams made a brilliant tackle and clearance to keep things all square at 0-0.
The breakthrough came in the 81st minute. Yannick Chevalier took the ball right through the Barbados back line and poked it past Primus for the goal.
The Bajan defeat leaves the door open for the Cayman Islands to reclaim first place on Saturday against the US Virgin Islands. Saint Martin cannot win the promotion spot, but can move into third place with six points heading into the final matchday.
